The ages of students at The Acting School range from 18 - 65+.  Under certain conditions, determined on an individual basis, persons under 18 may be admitted with the permission of their parent or guardian, the course instructor and the Executive Director.

I've been told that studying acting is good for someone working on emotional problems.   Is this true?
This is NOT a good Idea.  Anyone who is working on emotional issues is not a good candidate for acting workshops.  True, drama therapy and role-playing can be helpful, but only under the supervision of a mental health professional.  The staff and instructors at The Acting School are not trained, licensed or certified to handle these situations.  Therefore it is not recommended that an individual enroll for this purpose.

Is The Acting School of South Florida licensed and/or accredited?
Unfortunately, no, we are not licensed nor accredited.  We are not an educational institution.  We do not provide academic nor vocational training.  Because the entertainment industry does not regulate or require training for employment as an actor, the State of Florida considers our school "a vocational".  It is forbidden by law for The Acting School of South Florida to promise or imply "that people who enroll in or complete the program have a more substantial likelihood of obtaining employment in the field to which the training pertains than people who do not."
[Florida State Statues Ch. 1005.02 (3b)]

Since The Acting School of South Florida is an a vocational institution, we do not qualify for a license.  We are considered "exempt". [Ch 1005.06 (1d)]  In accordance with the State Statues, The Acting School of South Florida is required to include the following statement in all published materials:
"All programs, workshops and seminars offered at The Acting School are intended for enrichment and are not designed to qualify the participants for employment in the entertainment industry. The completion of any class at The Acting School is not a guarantee of employment or representation".

Accreditation as defined by the State of Florida in Ch. 1005.02 (1) is "accredited status awarded to an institution by an accrediting agency or association that is recognized by the United States Department of Education and that has standards comparable to the minimum standards required to operate an educational institution at that level in this state."  Here's the catch in accreditation, in order to apply for accredited status from one of these organizations, the applying institution must be licensed by the state where they do business.

The Acting School of South Florida, Inc. is a corporation registered with the State of Florida and has a license to operate in the City of Hollywood.

Development Goals

Overcome Fear
Depending upon which survey you’re reading, it’s either the number one fear people have or number two, behind snakes. Either way, it’s up there, more feared than death. You may remember the old Jerry Seinfeld joke that went something like, "Most people at a funeral would rather be in the casket, than giving the eulogy".  So we all know that speaking in public is dreaded by most human beings, which means you are not alone.
There are so many ways to overcome this fear, it is surprising that most people never try. Some people will try the simplistic imagine this or that tricks, you know the "Imagine your audience naked or in their underwear." Since that didn’t work, they just gave up and will spend the rest of their life reinforcing the FALSE notion, that they just can’t do it or they’re not the public speaking "type".  The fact is that one CAN learn to overcome performance anxiety. There are many methods and techniques out there, and perhaps you’ve tried some, if not most of them.
At The Acting School of South Florida, we take a more casual approach. Through the use of acting exercises, you will learn that whether you are communicating one on one or to a group it all comes down to GIVING YOURSELF PERMISSION TO DO IT.
We won’t give you rules and lists, but we can offer an environment where you will be able to discover obstacles to success that YOU are creating.

Develop Stronger Collaboration Skills
Learning the difference between compromise and collaboration is one of the most beneficial factors in becoming more successful. Compromise is doing either one thing or the other. Collaboration is working together to create something new that would not have existed before the expression of individual ideas. We see this confusion in many beginning actors. It is not until one is able to express ideas without holding on to them, but rather allowing them to evolve, that true collaboration can begin.
Since discovering the intention, beyond the words and behavior is the root of communication, and accepting another’s perspective, one must learn to cultivate openness as key to developing better collaboration skills.

Think More Quickly
There are not many things more important for a good leader than the ability to process quickly.
Some call it "Thinking on your feet", Really, it is about being able to access more than one option. Making choices is what an actor does. Accessing these options takes practice. The Acting School has workshops to enhance your thought process.

Learn to Say What You Mean and Understand Others
To do this one must become more Articulate & Specific. This was said before under "Collaboration Skills", but it bares repeating here. "Since discovering the intention, beyond the words and behavior is the root of communication, and accepting another’s perspective, one must learn to cultivate openness as key to developing better collaboration skills". This is also true in defining simple communication; it is about sending a clear message, making sure your message is understood, and clarifying if necessary. On the receiving end, it is vital that one send a signal that the message is understood. This is called a "transaction cycle." It is possible to learn to become a better communicator.  All it takes is practice.

Strengthen Observation Skills
I’ve heard people say that actors not only have an ability to remember the details of what others say and do, they can almost predict behavior. It comes down to learning to see what is in front of you and believing it to be true. Too many times we ignore or dismiss what is going on around us. Strengthening observation skills vital to understanding relationships and with this understanding we have the ability to be ready for anything.
